These spring engagement photos exemplify the beauty of Monument Avenue in Richmond, located by the historic Branch Museum. The photos embody the love story that Emma and Larus share. One that was destined from the beginning, filled with romance and nostalgia.
How They Met
The couple met when they were both attending James Madison University in 2017. But it was mutual friends who would eventually make the introduction on their behalf. For just over two years, they exchanged casual greetings, passing glances, and polite hellos. When their senior year arrived, they finally connected on a deeper level, and once the real conversation started, they found that they just couldn’t manage to stop talking. That one conversation was the very spark of their relationship, and they have happily been inseparable for just over six years.

A Destination Proposal
As their relationship continued to grow and evolve, the couple planned a dream getaway together. A trip to Chile, an amazing ski destination, where Larus planned a proposal at the top of one of the country’s highest peaks. The unforgettable moment was shaped by the atmosphere: blankets of snow high atop the world, with nothing but the cold and hearts full of adventure pushing them forward. Emma happily accepted Larus’s proposal, playfully tackling him to the ground with a resounding yes. The remainder of the day was spent in celebration, with food and drinks served mountainside, adding a layer of festivity to their already unforgettable proposal story.

Planning Their Wedding in Richmond
When they returned home from their trip, news of their engagement quickly spread. Friends and family were eager to hear the details of how Larus asked, while wondering what the couple had in mind when it came to their wedding day. As it turns out, a fall wedding was in order. One that will take place in the privacy of Larus’s family property in Richmond. The home provided the couple with a place to host their wedding, grounded in meaning and sentiment. Including a fragrant rose garden that has stood the test of time, blossoming on the grounds of the home for generations.
Both Emma and Larus felt the home was a testament to their enduring love for one another, while allowing them to honor family. With the location for their Richmond wedding secured, the couple began to dream of the moments that would shape their vows. Emma walking down the aisle towards Larus, and an evening spent dancing the night away, as husband and wife, with the most important people in their lives by their side.

Spring Engagement Photos Captured on Monument Avenue
As Emma and Larus laid the groundwork for their Richmond wedding at a private estate, they found they also wanted a way to commemorate the here and now. A way to honor the next steps they were taking together, while freezing time, just for a moment, to be present with one another while honoring their engagement.
When they reached out to me for their spring engagement photos, they had one specific request for their photoshoot. To shoot at a location that was deeply connected to their story, forgoing a trendy or even unfamiliar spot in favor of one rooted in the love they share.
Steps away from the Branch Museum, Monument Avenue in Richmond was a location closely located to Larus’s old apartment and Emma’s family home. It’s a space in the city that is known to them, a location that feels like a homecoming, and one they’ve walked together many times, bringing their story full circle.
The Charm of the Season and the Beauty of the Occasion
As a Richmond engagement photographer, my approach to capturing the couples I work with is organic. The moments unfold in natural sequence, occurring the same way they would as if they were out for a stroll on date night. I offer guided support when it’s needed the most, but I let my couples enjoy the beauty of the moment, fully immersing themselves in this space of time that belongs uniquely to them.
For Emma and Larus, it was a spring afternoon, in chic semi-formal attire, with their fur baby by their side. The flowers were in bloom, and the pavement was damp from a recent drizzle. It’s an environment that is all too familiar in Richmond for those of us who have felt the crisp spring breeze in the city. There was no place in particular to be that afternoon; there was no pull or pace to their session. It was a relaxed effort that felt uniquely them, as if the city knew to pause for a moment in their honor.
