A leisurely stroll along historic Monument Avenue for Ali & Stewart’s spring engagement session was an afternoon filled with flowers and fresh spring air. There is something to be said about the scenic beauty of spring in Richmond. The colorful blooms, the feeling of the city’s reemergence, and casual, romantic walks with the person you love. Imagine for a moment that you are recently engaged, just like Ali and Stewart. You find yourself examining the importance of marking the occasion with engagement photos. But you’re not quite sure how it feels to step into Richmond while observing it through a new lens.
Ali and Stewart felt the weight of their decision to shoot their engagement photos when it came time to select their wardrobe for the day. Something as seemingly trivial as selecting your wardrobe can suddenly become filled with importance when you realize that you are marking a major milestone in your life. With Easter just around the corner and the cherry blossoms of Richmond in full bloom, they leaned into the season to draw inspiration for their wardrobe. Ali with a barely pink puff sleeve dress. Stewart with a soft blue button-down shirt.
During our stroll along Monument Avenue for Ali & Stewart’s engagement photos, that feeling of the season continued to guide us.
Along the way, we explored tucked-away corners filled with climbing vines. Including pastel shutters and doors that accented stone buildings. It would be easy to confuse this backdrop with the rolling hills of Tuscany. But in reality, we were in the middle of the city. Of course, we were not the only sightseers enjoying the landscape of Richmond on that beautiful spring day. However, it felt as though everyone else was a world away.
When Ali and Stewart met, there wasn’t exactly a formal introduction involved. The couple sat next to each other in 8th-grade Spanish class. The extent of their conversations at that time involved reciting the occasional Spanish phrase to one another. It wasn’t until after college that they officially became a couple, with an engagement to follow. During a trip to the beach in Emerald Isle, NC Stewart asked for Ali’s hand in marriage. The conditions on the beach that day were high winds with partial overcast. But it was the perfect setting for an empty beach to make their proposal story intimate.
