There are some sessions that linger in your heart—and baby Eliana’s was one of them. This sweet newborn photography session took place in the cozy charm of Church Hill, one of the city’s most historic and beloved neighborhoods. As a photographer, it’s always a treat to work in homes full of character and love—and Eliana’s home was filled with both.

Her tiny features, expressive eyes, and peaceful presence made every image feel like a moment suspended in time. But her story? Even more beautiful.

A Long-Awaited Arrival

Eliana is, without a doubt, a little miracle. “We waited a while to try for a baby,” Sarah, her mom, shared. “Then it took us over 3 years to get pregnant. We didn’t think it would happen for us—but we’re so grateful it did.”

Her name, Eliana, means “my God has answered” in Hebrew—a perfect reflection of her parents’ long and hopeful journey. Capturing this chapter through newborn photography felt especially meaningful, as every image celebrated a story years in the making. “As soon as she was born, my husband and I looked at each other and said, ‘She’s Eliana, isn’t she?’” And just like that, she was.

Joy in the Smallest Moments

In the few weeks since she arrived, Eliana has already brought deep joy to her family. “It’s been so fun to watch her grow—even in small ways,” Sarah said. “She just started smiling and showing emotions. It’s magical to see her learning how to interact with us and the world.” Even Juneau, their sweet dog, has stepped up as the most loving “big sister.”

The Honest Transition to Parenthood

Like many families I meet as a Richmond newborn photographer, Sarah and Andrew are experiencing the full range of emotions that come with new parenthood. “Having so much of my existence be about keeping another human alive has been a huge challenge,” Sara admitted.

Sleep deprivation has been real—but they’ve found a rhythm. With the help of a Snoo bassinet (a modern marvel!), nighttime has become a bit more manageable. Andrew takes care of diaper duty and keeping snacks and clean pumping parts at the ready, while Sara breastfeeds and soothes Eliana.

They have a system—but admit that a full routine is still a work in progress.

Lessons Learned (the Hard and the Beautiful)

What advice would they offer to new parents?

“Accept help,” Sarah said. “Before having a baby, I was independent to a fault. Even with support, things were overwhelming. Once I said ‘yes’ to help—from meals to house chores to baby snuggles—I felt so much relief.”

They’ve also discovered some funny and surprising things:

Newborns make a lot of unexpected sounds (honks, grunts, and groans included!).

Baby life runs in cycles: sleep, eat, change, soothe, repeat.

Other parents are often eager to connect, share tips, and offer support.

Feeding, Family, and the Future

Eliana is breastfed, and she’s thriving. She takes a bottle too, which gives both parents time to bond with her during feedings—especially during those quiet nighttime hours.

When it comes to her looks, Eliana might be a perfect mix. “At first, she looked so much like her dad’s side of the family,” said Sara. “But with those eyebrows, we think she might end up with red hair like mine!”

As for what Sarah and Andrew hope for her future?

“We want to raise her with empathy, resilience, confidence, and curiosity,” they shared. “We hope she grows into a well-rounded person who leans into her passions and builds strong, loving relationships.”

Photographing Eliana in her Church Hill home was such a joy. As a Richmond newborn photographer, I feel so lucky to witness these sacred early days—when time feels slow, emotions run deep, and love is brand new.

Welcome to the world, Eliana. You are exactly where you’re meant to be.
