There’s something about summer that just brings romance to life. Long golden hours, garden blooms, and warm air full of excitement and possibility. For Bailey and Drew, their summer engagement session was not only dreamy—it was the perfect reflection of their journey together: unexpected, heartfelt, and full of laughter.
Their love story began in the most classic way: at their neighborhood bar, The Grill at Libbie and Patterson. But the truth is, Bailey and Drew had been circling each other’s worlds for years. Their sisters were best friends in nursing school at Radford University, and they often crossed paths at weddings, beach trips, and even gender reveal parties—without ever realizing just how close they already were.
One especially funny memory? About six months into dating, Drew mentioned his nephew’s gender reveal party. Bailey replied, “I was there.” He didn’t believe her until she perfectly described the moment the gender was revealed. Turns out, they’d been under the same roof six years earlier. If that’s not fate, what is?
Fast forward to football season in 2022, they both frequented The Grill with big groups of friends. Bailey would always recognize Drew and occasionally snap a pic to send to his future sister-in-law Mary. But it wasn’t until 2023 that Drew finally asked her out. As Bailey puts it, “It was the best and easiest yes!”
Opposites Attract (In the Best Way)
While they balance each other out perfectly, Bailey and Drew are quick to point out their differences. Bailey is Type A, a planner to the core, while Drew is more relaxed and easygoing. And yet, their personalities mesh so well—bringing calm to chaos and laughter to life’s serious moments.
Bailey was drawn to Drew’s confidence, kindness, and sense of humor. “He always makes me feel seen and understood,” she says. Drew, on the other hand, was immediately captivated by Bailey’s radiant smile and selflessness. “She’s always going the extra mile to make others happy.”
A First Date Full of Familiarity
Naturally, their first date took place at The Grill, the very place their paths officially crossed. They sat on the front patio, and although a little shy at first, it wasn’t long before the conversation flowed like they’d known each other for years. In many ways, they had.
A Summer Engagement Session to Remember
When it came time for their summer engagement session, Bailey and Drew knew exactly how they wanted to capture their story: romantic, personal, and deeply meaningful.
They started at Maymont’s historic gardens, surrounded by lush greenery, blooming florals, and winding paths that made every photo feel like a scene from a fairytale. “It felt timeless and elegant,” Bailey said. “It was better than anything I could have imagined.” The romantic ambiance reflected the depth of their connection and the joy they share.
From there, they went back to The Grill—a nod to the beginning of their love story. “This part of the session was so special and nostalgic,” they shared. Capturing memories in the exact spot where they first connected brought the session full circle, blending their past and future in a setting that means so much to them.
A Wedding Full of Heart and Heritage
Bailey and Drew chose St. Patrick’s Cathedral for their ceremony—a beautiful decision rooted in faith and a sweet twist of family history. They later discovered that Drew’s grandfather had not only attended school there but also served as an altar boy.
Their reception will be held at The John Marshall, a Richmond landmark known for its sophistication and grandeur. With ~230 guests, they wanted a space that could host a party-like vibe while still keeping the elegance intact. The built-in catering from Homemades by Suzanne sealed the deal.
Looking Ahead
As the big day approaches, the couple is most excited for that first look down the aisle—something they’ve chosen to save for the ceremony. “We’re aiming for a formal yet fun vibe,” Bailey shares, “and we can’t wait to dance the night away with our friends and family.”
Their Advice to Newly Engaged Couples
“Planning a wedding can be overwhelming. There are going to be a lot of opinions flying around. Make decisions together, respect each other’s input, and remember: this day should reflect you. Keep perspective, and in the midst of it all, focus on your love.”
