I find myself experiencing these takeaway moments during my work as a Richmond VA Engagement Photographer. Watching the James River flow in a tide of blue-green, and finding solace in the cloudy moments of a summer day when working with Madelyn and Ben. Summers in Richmond VA are notoriously hot and sticky. But embracing the sun, and conversely the clouds, during my couples engagement session, brought those ethereal moments out of their session. It was as if the season was embracing its playful side the afternoon we met at Maymont.
Madelyn and Ben are two giving souls who met while their time was dedicated to working at the Faison Center for Autism. During this time, Madelyn was working in the Early Learner Program with the younger kids, while Ben’s time was dedicated to working with the older children. However, their paths always seemed to cross daily, during their lunch hour. Madelyn’s eye first made its way to Ben when she noticed the artfully crafted lunches he packed daily. Subconsciously, she gave him the nickname “cool food guy”. However, the following summer when they both returned, Madelyn worked up the courage to ask Ben out for coffee.
What began as a playful joke in the lunch room, soon flourished into a loving relationship. Madelyn fell head over heels in love with Ben. He has a heart for giving and the children he works with are the center of his world. His evenings are often spent talking to Madelyn about the success stories of the children he works with. When that happens, Madelyn describes those conversations as filled with inescapable smiles and a celebration of life’s wins. Madelyn’s passion for working with children matches that of Ben’s. But, by all accounts, Madelyn is much more the to-do list maker of the two of them. They spend their days enjoying delectable bowls of pasta (their favorite) and enjoying the outdoors.
Being a Richmond VA Engagement Photographer, it would be near impossible to not want to showcase the beautiful story that Madelyn and Ben have woven together. Two big hearts who dedicate their time to changing children’s lives. It feels like a tall order, but, in the same regard, such an honor and a privilege. As their engagement photographer, I wanted to set the tone for their Richmond VA session. My approach was to bring out a playful sense of reverence. While making the experience as easygoing as possible. Madelyn and Ben selected Maymont as their chosen location for their session. Their love of the outdoors heavily drove their decision, coupled with the ethereal quality that Maymont evokes.
Knowing my sweet couple chose this location for the scenescape it provides, I was ready to etch their story into a visual dream that they could share with their family and friends.
