As a Virginia engagement photographer, it’s not uncommon for me to spend my days outdoors with sweet couples who are over the moon in love. This recent session with Molly and Peter at the VMFA is proof positive of that.

Molly and Peter’s love story began with a chance meeting at a mutual friend’s Thanksgiving party. They were both invited to spend the day in gratitude, surrounded by loving friends. But when Molly arrived, she noticed Peter was the only friend in attendance with whom she wasn’t already acquainted. She was encouraged to strike up a conversation with Peter, which she did. That conversation proved to be serendipitous because their very first date was set for just a few days later. Now, after nearly five years together, enjoying all of life’s many ups and downs, the day arrived when Peter asked for Molly’s hand in marriage.

The proposal happened on black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), four years after that initial meeting. Molly was out enjoying the morning, shopping for friends and family for the upcoming holiday. Meanwhile, Peter was patiently waiting for Molly’s return. He set up rose petals and champagne in her living room to surprise her the moment she walked through the door. Molly happily accepted, and together they began planning their wedding.

Both Molly and Peter are two gentle, loving souls. Peter exudes a calming and steady presence but is not afraid to have fun and be goofy when the situation calls for it. Conversely, Molly is filled with care and compassion for others. She is in tune with the needs of those around her, and she is quick to offer her love and support.

Working with Molly and Peter as their Virginia engagement photographer was a blissful experience, and I found myself filled with gratitude for having played a part in their story. When we scheduled their engagement photos, we decided to meet at the VMFA. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts offers stunning grounds that evoke an otherworldly feeling. The architecture of the building, combined with the topiaries and the outdoor sculptures, provides a serene setting. One where I could focus on capturing the love that Molly and Peter share.

As a Virginia engagement photographer, I view engagement photos as so much more than another item on your wedding planning checklist. Undoubtedly, getting married is the end result of your engagement, but your recent proposal is also a time to celebrate. You’ve committed to experiencing life together, and you’ve found the person your soul desires above all others. That alone is such a beautiful sentiment. Additionally, capturing engagement photos together is a way to silence all the noise and chatter of wedding planning, for just a moment, and focus on each other. Being in one another’s presence and remembering what this journey is all about is worthy of a professional photography experience.

Of course, I asked Molly and Peter about their wedding day. But not on the granular, what is your color scheme level. I asked them what they were both looking forward to the most when their day arrived. For Molly she couldn’t wait for that moment down the aisle. Instead of exchanging a first look with Peter, they are going to going to see each other for the first time on the day of their wedding, at the ceremony. Molly is looking forward to meeting eyes with Peter when she makes her entrance. Peter’s answer to the same question was simply but beautifully put; he can’t wait to marry his best friend.
